MAKER ARCHITECTURE

DESIGN EXCELLENCE FOR THE COMMON GOOD

The structures we design will endure for generations. They will shape our environments for living, working, and civic life. The architect’s job is to maximize the good we experience in these carefully built spaces.

Maker Architecture seeks in every project the highest “goodness quotient” possible. We believe that contemporary architecture should meet the client’s needs in a manner that is responsible to the environment we share and the communities we inhabit.

GOOD FOR THE CLIENT

Our approach begins and ends with good listening. What are your needs? How do you see yourself using this space?  How do you see yourself using this space in fifteen years? The client’s needs present the parameters for every successfully solved design problem.

GOOD FOR THE ENVIRONMENT

Maker highly values the sustainability of human cultural expression in the era of global climate change awareness. Sustainability is not just using energy efficiently. It begins in the earliest phases of design: the needs of the client, the layout on the site, the selection of materials, the location of openings, and the successful integration of advanced mechanical, electrical, plumbing, and structural systems.

GOOD FOR THE COMMUNITY

Every structure contributes to our shared public spaces. We design structures that are responsible to their surroundings, relevant to society and contribute to the quality of life for all people who live in relation to them.

PRINCIPAL: JACKSON DEN HERDER, AIA

A childhood of making in my family’s farm workshop drew me to architecture in the first place. I still practice architecture today because I love the process of making on both small and large scales. After studying at the College of Design at Iowa State University, I joined Neumann Monson Architects, where I maintained a general practice for seven years. My residential and civic projects, such as the Knock Residence and the Career Academy of Pella, have been recognized widely for excellence in contemporary design. One of my most interesting and gratifying projects was to design the first purpose-built Mosque in the state of Iowa, for a community of immigrants that was ready for their own worship space. Some of my smaller projects have included interior renovations and custom design for small businesses. With the Raleigh Architecture Company, I specialized in contemporary residential architecture. In addition to architecture, I am a woodworker and carpenter with an extensive portfolio of furniture pieces.

Jackson is a licensed architect in both Iowa and North Carolina. Maker is located in the Triangle region of North Carolina but we travel as needed to design spaces anywhere. Contact us for a conversation.
